Bike parking facilities for Moscow
Around 2014, when the bicycle movement in Moscow was only beginning to grow and bike lanes were still rare—like small, miraculous oases—the Department of Transportation and I started working on an experimental urban bike-parking project, aiming for the level of infrastructure seen in the Netherlands and Denmark.

For the pilot, we were given a site in the Mitino district, a major residential area and a transport hub for people commuting from Zelenograd into the city. The project was developed with support from KLM and discussed within a small working group. My role included not only designing the structure and the format, but also coordinating communication between all stakeholders.

I invited my friend and highly respected architect Andrey Ukolov, who had previously collaborated with me on experimental mobile urban-architecture projects. Together, we developed several solutions that satisfied everyone involved.

The key challenge turned out to be security and access control—with the resources available at the time, we couldn’t implement a reliable system, and without that, we couldn’t guarantee quality. So the project was temporarily put on hold.

P.S. By 2024, the project was implemented—right there in Mitino, fully realized with all details accounted for.

It’s an amazing feeling to be ahead of the curve. I believe that’s the real value: when an idea begins to work a little before its time.
